A New Kind of New Year
Updated: Jan 3, 2022
Here we are again, having survived another year of unprecedented worldwide change. Where 2020 seemed to drag on forever, 2021 seemed to go by in a flash! We witnessed the best and the worst in human behavior, while Nature expressed her outrage. It was sometimes difficult to maintain my equilibrium in the face of such chaos. But always, always, there was Art.
After a solid year of “virtual” events, it was wonderful to resume in-person participation in our area’s markets and festivals. Public reception was fantastic, and it was so much fun to meet so many new people and new artists, even while renewing connections with old friends and established artists. It was a year of experimentation and expectation, and once I got used to the actual physical logistics of setting up a booth (again), I had a great time! Fortunately, a long-time friend decided to join me for the season, and that made it a lot easier and twice as much fun! Vending at these events isn't for everyone, but she turned out to be a natural!
One of the things I recognized in my interactions is how many artists are out there selling their work in local events. Some of them I’ve known for years, and some are recent discoveries, but each of them is talented and dedicated to her/his craft. Most of them are on social media, and many of them work one or more full-time jobs, but they all create beautiful and intriguing art. I usually do a social media post about these artists whenever possible, but I’d like to take it a step farther.
